Alan, I checked Amazon in the US and it doesn't seem to be available? Sorry I didn't bother to chapter and verse the rest of the Amazon info. Bring lazy I just assumed that the publication date wouldn't need pointing out in my post. As you'll note from a few posts earlier it was $25.

Any news on the latest books? Dean Alger's or James Obrecht? Last time I communicated with Jas about his (last month) he was "proofreading". Dean's is right on schedule for publication next month, he mentioned something about having been sent a "finished copy". I just don't understand how the publisher manages to retail a hardback book at half the price they normally are. But we should complain.....

Thanks Alan. I assume both books will be worth adding to a collection of essential blues books?

As that great man once remarked, "all things are relative". If unsure await reviews, either from specialist magazines or blogs like Ron Wienstock's In A Blue Mood. Ron's recent review is of The Great Jazz Guitarists - The Ultimate Guide by Scott Yanow. He doesn't pull his punches inabluemood.blogspot.co.uk/

Val is not only a first rate photographer but also a skilful interviewer who manages complete empathy with all those she writes about or photographs.
Her 1989 autobiography Mama Said There's Be Days Like This: My Life In The Jazz World is a frank, entertaining and educative read.

Perhaps Dean's book will throw more light on Lonnie's performance at the Royal Festival Hall London, 29 June 1952 where he sang:
Stardust Just Another Day Backwater Blues Careless Love + 5 others (unknown)
Hopefully Dean's found some contemporary reviews of the event.
Legend has it that Lonnie made "back stage" recordings with Anthony (Lonnie) Donegan, whose Jazz Band appeared on the same bill.

Perhaps Dean's book will throw more light on Lonnie's performance at the Royal Festival Hall London, 29 June 1952... I have ordered my copy Alan. We shall see! Legend has it that Lonnie made "back stage" recordings with Anthony (Lonnie) Donegan, whose Jazz Band appeared on the same bill. Now this would be something to hear! Have the recordings not surfaced anywhere?

Now this would be something to hear! Have the recordings not surfaced anywhere? Not as far as I'm aware, but that doesn't mean much. I leave such matters in the hands of those more suited to the task. Later addition: The list of songs were stumbled upon in the mid eighties at the then British Sound Archive in Kensington, London. I think the BSA has since been subsumed into the vast British Library complex in Euston, London and probably boxed up in a basement. Cynical, moi? Perish the thought.

Wonder how JasO is progressing on his bio on Lonnie Johnson?

Wonder how JasO is progressing on his bio on Lonnie Johnson? Good question. I'll drop him a tactful hint and see if he responds.
