I just finished K-PAX for the second time; it's simply one of those books my mind will turn to on occasion, I suspect because it illustrates such a broad range of human pathos through a remarkably gripping story. The movie was fine, especially the planetarium scene (which did not occur in the book), but it's Brewer's nuts and bolts discussion of legitimate psychiatric study throughout the story that makes the book a superior specimen.
I bought this book for 50 cents at a yardsale!
Additionally, having come late the Game of Thrones' television phenomenon (which worked out well, as I was able to burn through all 3 seasons in about 10 days without delay!); I have begun the print series, purchasing the available 5 volumes as a set...the degree of detail is staggering; I haven't lived within such a textured fictional world since re/re/re-reading Tolkien
Edit (5/6): Well, I've ordered K-Pax II & III, though I'm a bit dubious about even Brewer's ability to 'prot'-ract the premise that long...we'll see!/k

Nice thread Kate.
I'm reading Dean Alger's bio of Lonnie Johnson.

Thanks, Jim! I would be curious to learn your opinion of the book and recount of any particularly insightful or poetic passages. I became cursorily familiar with Johnson while listening to his contributions during guest spots with the Armstrong and Ellington bands, having read about both in works addressing the Dead's jazz and blues' roots.

Finished this a couple of weeks ago. Full of fascinating stuff on everything from blindness to the music business. Also took me to the classic quintet sides of 1949 which are really something. IMHO he reached his peak then and afterwards went into artistic decline as his income ballooned.

Finished this last week. Szwed is an excellent and thorough writer. I paid no attention to Sun Ra until recently, but have become a fan.
