STOP! If you read this thread's title and rushed off to find clips of "death metal" rock bands( you know, those with mere two chord progressions with someone growling unintelligible lyrics in a COOKIE MONSTER voice) FORGET IT! That's NOT what this is about. Back in the late '50's or so and into the '60's there was a glut of top 40 rock tunes dealing with the loss of a boyfriend, girlfriend and deeply loved significant other through some kind of tragedy. Examples..... "TEEN ANGEL"--Mark Dinning; '59 "TELL LAURA I LOVE HER"--Ray Peterson; '60 "PATCHES"--Dickie Lee( not the '70 Clarence Carter tune) '62 "LAST KISS"--J. Frank Wilson; '64( and a cover of Wayne Cochran's '61 tune) If I missed any, which isn't unlikely, feel free to add 'em in! Whitefang

Used to be a dumb joke around that tune... ie: Someone would ask, "Do you like Running Bear?" And of course, the song was SO popular anyone would answer, "Yes!" but, playing on the one word's homophone nature, the asker would then ask, "Don't you get COLD?" (*GROAN!) Usually, in a "death-rock" tune one or the other would die, but in "Running Bear", both do. But that's OK And too, the theme really wasn't limited to "rock" music, and sometimes (like in the next example) it wasn't the SINGER who lost someone, but was the singer who was lost..... Whitefang

Tom Dooley. Not rock but part of the history. How about Tom Petty's "Last Dance"? Dying of a sort.
Dylan's "Heaven's Door".

Edith Jones & Leon Childs Combo - "I Don't Care No More" Perhaps the best-pressed version of the haunting cult classic, "Dead."

Well, Scorpio helped prove( with those Little Ceasar posts) that these things aren't limited to "rock", or even have to be any good! More of this in a different genre--- ( I had that 45, but my jenky memory puts it as the "B" side of "Desert Pete". I like the way in this song, the cemetery is referred to as "Marble Town". And more recently---- Whitefang

LOVE Albert Collins! For years. Was dragged to a movie I didn't want to see, but wound up liking it OK, but was DEE-LIGHTED to see Albert show up in THIS scene!---- Sorry about the bad audio sync in the clip, but not MY fault!
And from "Adventures In Babysitting"('87)
