I'm talkin' about those rockin' tunes that, despite their age, still get you cranking the radio up, bobbin' your head, tapping or stomping your foot and bouncin' in your chair! Now, I've tried this in other forums with mixed results. Some, with a measure of foreign membership, couldn't wrap their minds around the term "kicks ass" when it came to music. And others( usually Facebook dweebs) just thought I meant songs they still liked. Well... There's a LOT of older songs that I still like, but many don't necessarily "kick ass". Like say, "Jennifer, Juniper" by Donovan, or "Tell Me" by the Stones. So, I'll list as many as I remember from my earlier threads to give an idea... "Rock Around The Clock"/ Bill Haley and His Comets "Maybelline"/ Chuck Berry (There's plenty by Chuck that fills the bill, but I'll give others a chance too ) "19th Nervous Breakdown"/ Rolling Stones "My Generation"/ The Who "Gimme Some Lovin'"/Spencer Davis Group "Ramblin' Gamblin' Man"/Bob Seger "Fire"/ Jimi Hendrix "Whole Lotta Love"/ Led Zeppelin (Throw "Black Dog" in as well) There's many others by most of the artists listed up there, but I'm trying to leave room for others. So, have at it! Whitefang

The Yardbirds songs like "Over Under Sideways Down", Happenings Ten Years Past", Jeff's Boogie" and a few more get me going. Same with James Brown's "I Go Crazy", "Cold Sweat" Wilson Pickett's "6345789", "Funky Broadway, "99-1/2" Led Zeppelin "Communication Breakdown", "Whole Lotta Love" (to name a few) I have some kickers from later '80s on decades but not quite as many as the earlier ones.

Much as I hate to, I have to admit the '80's are getting to be considered "the day". But I've been listening to so much different music for so long there are tunes that to me still "kick ass" although some a few years younger might consider them "quaint". But they do it for me also mostly for "old time's sake" Like.... "Let's Dance"/ Chris Montez "Red River Rock"/ Johnny and The Hurricanes "California Sun"/ The Rivieras (BTW: MY copy of the 45 had a different label for a different song on the "B" side, but somehow both sides had the same song pressed on it.) "Treat Her Right"/ Roy Head Whitefang

Go back further. Big Joe Turner had several that were fuel for swing dance crowds in the 50's, most notably Shake Rattle and Roll and Flip Flop and Fly.

Well, I suppose those Joe Turner tunes still "kick ass" for some( for ME anyway! ) But the idea isn't OLD tunes that do.... as in how old can you get. My aim is at those tunes from any INDIVIDUAL'S past, be it five years ago or 20-30( and in my case as far as 60) years ago. And not GENERALLY, but to YOU(or whomever) in particular. Some people might think that NONE of the tunes mentioned so far EVER "kicked ass". As subjective music has always been I expected a wide breadth of examples. BTW----- "Shake Rattle and Roll" and "Flip, Flop and Fly" were both 12 bar blues tunes done more in a "Jump Blues" style(ala LOUIS JORDAN) from the early '50's, long past when "swing dancers" quit showing up at dance clubs, the "swing" era being generally from '35 or so until just after WWII. And going back that far, and speaking of Louis Jordan, his "Saturday Night Fish Fry" can be added to my list. Whitefang PS: My Mom had the BILL HALEY version of "Shake, Rattle and Roll" on 45 for some reason, and I grew up with that one and it was not until my mid 20's that I ever heard Joe's version. Both seemed to have been released the same year(1954).

And too, and for old time's sake, I could add "LOUIE, LOUIE" by The Kingsmen to my list! I still get a kick out of.... whenever it comes on the radio and I'm in a room with a few or more people... when it starts I'll yell, "Everybody! SING ALONG!" Just listen how the guy sings the lyrics and you'll understand. Whitefang

50's rock and roll (most all of it) 60's Rock (most all of that) 70's rock (the parts that descended from the 50's and 60's Rock), and of course Van Halen and Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Dixie Dregs, Eric Johnson era, and that bunch that descended from the hard rock days, just before heavy metal (That is when I jumped the popular music ship). So for my listening pleasure. I listen to that bunch,
When I listen to music I stick with the likes of Allman Brothers, Mountain, Roy Buchanan, Dixie Dregs. I have thousands of MP3's on my MP3 player from the fifties onward to the mid 80's

So far, DBM, I've been lookin' for specific SONGS that despite their age, still get your foot tappin', head bobbin', butt swingin' and your hand quickly reaching for the volume knob to CRANK! IT! UP!! See the OP for my short list. And which I'll add to every time I recall any others. I did a thread like this on Musicplayer several years ago, and long ago enough for me to forget all I listed then. In 1986, Me, my yet to be 2nd wife and my younger daughter went to a pre grand prix show at Detroit's HART PLAZA where CHUCK BERRY was putting on a show FREE to anyone who showed up. My daughter was skeptical as she only knew Chuck was some old guy who played rock'n'roll back way before she was born. Halfway through she was surprised at how many people of ALL ages were jumpin' up and down to his music and more surprised when she discovered HERSELF getting caught up in it! THEN she understood why whenever some tune of his would come on the radio in the car, I'd crank it up to "blow out the window" level! She too, now realizes a lot of her favorite tunes are more than 30 years old( her now being 44) and a lot of the shine has worn off many of them, but then too, there's STILL a few that for her, "kick ass". Her older sister( by 3 years) got that a while ago. Whitefang

Bob Seger's Ramblin' Gamblin' Man. I kinda wanted to BE that. jbone, as an old Detroiter, many Seger tunes do that for me too. Actually, as you can see over to the left, I'm from LINCOLN PARK, MI, a suburb just over the southwest border of the city. But geographically, whenever anyone who lives within a 20 mile radius around the city, when out of town, will tell people, "I'm from DETROIT!" As for Seger tunes... "Lucifer" is one that gets me cranking up the radio too. Along with "Back In '72" mostly because of his mentioning Lincoln Park in it. But to us Lincoln Parkers, it's the sardonic tone in which it's mentioned we get a kick out of. See if you catch it---- ('bout 1:34 in...) Oh, and "home of the MC5" is a fact. Their drummer DENNY "Machine gun" THOMPSON (real name TOMICH) used to live across the street. Whitefang
