Have a safe trip, DBM. Whitefang Thanks amigo. I am still in New Jersey on an island out in the ocean, logging in using my sisters computer. Rain today, yesterday almost Arizona hot, 95 degrees 95% humidity. But having a great time with family. Big steak dinner party tonight for ten folks. 86 bucks for the steaks, we sprung for the steaks. My brother in law who used to sing high tenor with me in my old a-Capella group "The Soundmasters" is a grill meister. Renowned in the family for his grilling skills. The BBQ is under a canopy so even though we have to sit inside, the steaks will get done.
The plane was 3/4ths of an hour late taking off, and we never got here till 10:00 PM we should have landed at 6:30, and with traffic out of Philadelphia, 30 miles of bumper to bumper traffic on the last 30 miles of local roads, made the whole travel day a little antsy. But we got'er done. Been partying ever since. I will need to be home to rest up from the vacation. Steak and red wine starting in an hour. Batchatcha in a day or so, and of course daily after I get home.

The steaks were almost as awesome as visiting with my extended family at the bigger than I was told party. I saw relatives I have not seen in years, or have not met before. It was a blast.

Didn't play guitar for a week, plus a day to re-orient myself after coming home. I played yesterday, and it was cleaner than usual. Today back at the daily fret-board grind.

I know that over the years there have been times I just did not play harp for a week, or even up to a year once. In the interval my mind would conspire with my mouth and throat and lungs to surprise me with new stuff I could do when I did get back to it. That ever happen to you?

I quit playing for a half dozen years or so between 1989 and 1999. Once I got back into it, I did a lot of new stuff because I could not play my old stuff like I did when I practiced 4 hours a day every day. I actually play better than I did before the layoff. Back before the layoff I was playing a lot of notes with no or very few pauses and sustaining. Now I play a lot less in notes and in volume, and there is pauses in the right places. Others can relate to what I do now, (they could not relate to my 32 note per measure run phase). I just enjoy it for recreation, I have no desire to go out and play live in clubs.

I'm not finished learning by any stretch, but the aHA moments come further apart these days. And the emphasis has changed some, where it was once very focused on mechanics of doing a part in a song "like the masters did", it's been more an exploration of what works in a given song now.
In the duo with my wife we have expanded from pretty much all blues into some Americana, roots, and rock. Some 20 years ago I had expanded my play style from mostly cross or 2nd position harp, into 3rd as well. This broadened my possibilities for doing a song by a lot. Then in the past 3 or 4 years Jolene has brought some material to the table- both roots/rock covers and also original material- where the best fit was straight or 1st position playing, so I got to get back to real basics.
The adventure still continues. We do love playing to people. Our summer has had several live dates locally and folks seem to like what we do. Every time out I go by instinct coupled with experience. The result is usually good!

That first sentence amuses me Bone. But lemme 'splain why------ Some years back I read an interview with ANDRES SEGOVIA when he was in his 80's, and the interviewer asked how he felt being considered the best guitarist in the world. And Segovia answered, "You had better ask him, as I'm still learning." And that reply amused me too( and delighted me as well) as it showed that even at his level of skill and virtuosity Segovia still had healthy humility and the ability to not take himself too seriously. And that's something this world( and some of the forums I've been in) could use more of. And, nice hearing from you again DBM. Whitefang

If you know it all why stay on the planet? I have a lot to learn! But it's sometimes tempting to rest on the ol' laurels a bit and just do what has worked for x amount of time. Until it gets stale. And does not work so well any more. We're getting ripe to write more material this winter and get it ready to record. It won't be the old formula either. Some will be a bitch no doubt.

And, nice hearing from you again DBM. Whitefang I came back to keep in touch with the folks here, some of whom were on the Guitar Players that Jim created. When I think of something interesting to me I will post it, if I read a thread of interest to me I will participate.
