I used to play hooky from a Catholic High school in Philly. I hated that school, and I hated living in Philly. (I actually hated living in any city really). Anyways I used to go to The White Castle and buy some of those hamburgers they used to sell. As I recall they were little ones and you could get multiple numbers of them for a dollar (or 2)(this was in the late 50's) I used to ride the subway back and forth all day long, and I knew the stops where you could cross over and stay inside the subway without leaving the station, that way I could ride all day for one fare. I would leave the subway to get the burgers and pay one more fare home on the surface trolley cars (I used to get a transfer on the way to the subway, and then ride the trolley to the subway for most of the day and then go home after The White Castle. Anyways I can't say as I remember what the burgers tasted like but after a day on the subway they were probably delicious to a 15 year old.
That is my White Castle story. I never-ever went in one after that.

I mentioned TOP HAT Hamburger, which were the same thing basically. And cooked by the same method. The difference was that White Castle patties had five holes in them( placed like the five dots on a die) and Top Hat had no holes. And they cost about the same. When me and some buddies would "cut classes" in high school( same as "hooky", but not as arcane )we'd go to the Top Hat across Dix/Toledo road from the Sears shopping center, where we knew old man Armolegous(the truant official) would be on the lookout. Top Hat did have those counter top Seeburg juke box units and White Castle had no juke box of any kind. So we headed for Top Hat. Long about late '69, they moved the Top Hat building across town on Fort Street, and I got a job there that lasted for all of a week. But I kept hangin' out there because one of those counter top units was busted to where I figured out how to play tunes for free! There were several burger places that resembled each other as far as produt was concerned. Another White Castle type of burger could be found at a chain called WHITE TOWER. Another popular burger chain( with a very few still in existence) is CARTER'S, which had a unique(from others) burger that was smothered in fried onions. There was one a block from my elementary school that's still there( the building only though) which is now one of those Ham/Corned Beef palaces. Their closest competitor was MOTT'S, located mostly in Detroit proper, with one still operating in the same location since the late '30's. DALY Burgers was good too and still has a couple of their drive-ins still going. But closed and moved from Lincoln Park in the early '60's. Cripes, am I ever rambling..... so I'll drop this for now. Right after I posted that it started raining and it's about 55 now. Supposed to get chillier over night too. If you don't like the weather in (insert locale), just wait 15 minutes.

It's always been FIVE minutes here in Michigan! The joke used to be there's only two seasons here. Indian Summer and Winter. Now, Indian Summer has been replaced by "Road construction". Whitefang

Sitting in a muggy 80 degrees at a KOA outside Austin Tx. now. I once lived in Austin for several years, it was actually one of my most favored places that I ever spent time in. I used to eat lunch every day at the very first ever Whole Foods Market at 914 Lamar Boulevard in Austin Tx.

We made it to Pharr yesterday afternoon. The never ending drive. For 300 miles it seemed a lot longer. Northwest wind kept me a little busy but not too bad.

Yes it is DB, unless something goes hinky. In which case I am checking on other opps in the general vicinity. There's one near Corpus Christi, which we like more coastal areas anyway for music purposes. Seems like folks are more open to the new kids passing through on the coasts. First blush, the weather here is pretty much fabulous. High 60's and sunny with a slight breeze. Grapefruit trees within 20 feet of our door- green so far! This place has a tone of cool amenities- Tropic StarI dug out the pool cue, 9 beautiful regulation tables! Swimming pool, basketball, wood shop, all kinds of stuff. Supposed to be a big open mic with a lot of players starting soon. As soon as I know my schedule I'll contact the first venue, a farmers market that wants us to give them a try. Then we'll check out some other places. I'm also thinking we may get some poolside gigs at other resorts maybe. A friend suggested I may want to offer harmonica symposiums, yeah right! Possible. Think of a store, it's probably here.
