Well 2 things for me. One is the question of neuropathic issues in my feet, painful at times. The other is variety of sounds. I'd like about 4 sounds, bass, snare, shaker, and tambourine. Smither does a good job no doubt. I know my first challenge will be to get and stay spot on the beat. Maybe that's actually first of all.

So we had the guitar back in the shop to have the metal insert filed down some and when Jo tried it she still was not getting the sound she wanted. We got a lighter pair of strings and put them on last evening. Passable but note great. We think we'll keep this one for me to learn on and get her another one, but it will be face to face, guitar in lap road test. I had bought a square neck like this one some 5 years ago and had planned to learn on it but lost it in our travels, so this would be kind of a replacement for that one.
I already have a 11/16" socket, deep well 12 point, to use for a slide since Jo's glass slide is way too little!
The action on this one is still very high I think due to the bridge having been replaced, which raises the action from the other end. Any lower on the headstock end will make for string buzz.
For a learning tool it will be okay I think. We can sell it off later if need be but we've got an extra $100 in it now. Need to try and get some use out of it!
There's a guy in Austin which is about 1 1/2 hours east that has a lot of vintage Kays and Regals, and I think when we can we'll head over and see what he's got.

Good luck with the fix on Jo's guitar. Take a picture of the bridge, and post it here amigo. I might have something to say that may help. I have a bit of experience with that kind of stuff.

I'll see what I can do but I think we're going to let this one go. As usual at a loss. We have to wait until Jo's back is all the way better before taking a 3 or 4 hour day trip to Austin to shop for a fresh axe though. No hurry.

Looking back over the years we've really been fortunate with guitars. Jo has been GIVEN 3. We're stumbled onto some nice deals and also good horse trades on others. I think it's also like a classic car you try to use as daily driver. Ultimately you will spend money just trying to stay even let alone improve it!
In the final tally I believe we're ahead of the curve.

Well good news overnight. The seller on this guitar has offered to refund price plus shipping and let us keep the guitar! Which we plan to donate to a charity here. I think that's very decent of the guy.

Well if you think about it, online vendors have a rep to keep up. A few bad reviews and they lose business. I gave the guy a very good rating because he gave us a good deal and the guitar looked good when I unpacked it. I did not look closely though. Plus it had new tuners. Once the luthier saw it and told me it had had a cracked at the neck and repair, and a new bridge, which the whole tail section had a lot of flex to it, well I was a little embarrassed. Jolene was in touch with the seller and she was nice but stated our case and he offered us a refund in full. Still it was going to cost $50 to ship and we dropped about $100 on setup, 2 trips. Seller was nice enough to offer the refund and let us keep the guitar. Which will go to a thrift store. We still lost some $ on the whole deal but thinking about the guitars Jo has been given, we're still in tall green grass. Over about 16 years she has been given 3 guitars, a Kay 12 string electric, a Danelectro DanoBlaster (sort of a Deluxe Strat), and an Epiphone Emperor Regent. All of which were either traded or sold off as her needs changed. So who's complaining? We'll address the slide guitar question as she get stronger after her back injury.
