I like THE ALBUM - ELLINGTON AT NEWPORT because of the great saxaphonist Paul Gonsalves. His solo on Crescendo to Dimenuendo in Blue set the stage for all of the great sax solos to come during the bebop years. I can listen to this for hours...
Just wish I could play it like Paul...

Hmmm. Maybe a little time warp with that Gonsalves. The famous solo was recorded in 1956, by which time bebop was a thing of the past (though it most asuredly lives on, recreated and updated). Still, Gonsalves' was an important solo for helping to revive Ellington's sagging fortunes.

I hope that Gonsalves observation didn't come off as negative. That would be bad form on a first post!
I like Jazz duos because the interplay is so visible.

I like Hank Jones because my piano teacher told me to check him out. No really, I like him because, well, he as great. He was really tasteful, had a lovely touch and tone, and played ballads really evocatively.

I didn't really look too closely at the date of the solo, so I'm glad for your input. I enjoy SWING JAZZ OF THE 40'S with bands such as Count Basie because of the great rhythms, and how these performances seemed to take away the thoughts of War and Depression! Plus since I really enjoy the piano in Jazz, it doesn't hurt to have someone like Count Basie on the ivories!

I like love Count Basie in the 1930s (Lester Young, Jo Jones, Buck Clayton, Harry Edison, Walter Page...) because that's where swing was born (not to take anything away from Ellington, Henderson and others).

I like/love Blue Note Records because it's the jazz label which pretty much started me on my jazz journey.

+1 on Blue Note.
Contemporary Records - pretty much turned me on to "West Coast Jazz", and they employed the great recording engineer Roy DuNann.

I like Hank Jones because Like Someone in Love (Take 1) from I Remember You (Paris, 1977) (The Definitive Black & Blue Sessions) might be the most beautiful thing I've ever heard.

I like the Wayne Shorter Quartet (Danilo Perez, John Patitucci and Brian Blade) because they were amazing and completely blew my mind last night.

Tadd Dameron. Hard to say exactly why, but when I was beginning to seriously "explore" jazz listening, I heard a bebop compilation (Proper "Bebop spoken here" iirc), and all the Dameron tunes really stood out. Tadd was key in my becoming a huge bop/hard bop fan (even kind of a dinosaur that way).
