Robert Plant Discovers Unreleased Led Zeppelin Music
Recordings feature bassist John Paul Jones on lead vocals
October 18, 2013
In a recent interview with BBC Radio 6, Robert Plant revealed that he has unearthed some previously unreleased Led Zeppelin recordings. When the DJs asked him about "hidden gems" on the forthcoming remasters of the band's catalog, he said he'd discovered a few.
"I found some quarter-inch spools recently," he said. "I had a meeting with Jimmy [Page] and we baked 'em up and listened to 'em. And there's some very, very interesting bits and pieces that probably will turn up on these things."
Among them are some recordings featuring the group's bassist and keyboardist John Paul Jones on lead vocals. "So far, he's going to give me two cars and a greenhouse not to get 'em on the album," Plant said with a hearty laugh. "Oh, John, wherever you are with your opera, John, you can't wait to hear yourself singing all over the world." (Jones is writing an opera with Robyn Hitchcock and the Norwegian group Supersilent.)
Last year, Page told Rolling Stone that he's been working on an extensive remastering of Led Zeppelin's oeuvre. "The catalog was last remastered 20 years ago," the guitarist said, referring to the 1990 release of the four-CD box set Led Zeppelin. "That's a long time. Everything is being transferred from analog to a higher-resolution digital format. That's one of the problems with the Zeppelin stuff. It sounds ridiculous on MP3. You can't hear what's there properly." He also revealed that while the group didn't record many additional songs when making records, they did record "different versions of things, different approaches to the mixes." He said the band would include "the substantial stuff" in the reissues.
Currently, there is no release date for the remastered catalog.

It wikll be interesting to see what they come up with though I can't help thinking that in these situations, is can be best to leave things unreleased.

I didn't really like John Paul Jones' vocals as much as Plant's. But let's hope they laid down some great tracks. It would be nice to hear some good blues rock.

Ugh. I've gotten to the point that I generally hate rereleases. It wasn't all that long ago that I bought the LZ Complete on iTunes. I thought *that* was remastered for the digital era. Sigh.

I agree, JM...and without (apparently) a true audiophile's discerning ear I'm content to be bludgeoned by the primitive cacophony of original releases or 1st gen remasters. As with Floyd and the Dead, the appeal of Zep for me is in live performance; thus, I've gravitated to the world of boots (thanks ebay), the most recent and best-sounding being Destroyer. Sooooooo, I'd rather see the band begin releasing cleaned up (which is, in fact, an official Ph.D.-level sound engineering term!) live shows..../kate
P.S.: CSNY could take a cue here. Incidentally, just when the heck is that alleged 74 box coming out? Perhaps Nash will get it together by the 50th anny? (he seems to be the public point man for the venture)

Re mastered albums are out soon- I just know I will buy them- can't help myself! I saw the deluxe reissues of I-III slated for D-Day (almost)...I just wish Zep woulda taken a page out of REM's book and added a show or sets from tours attendant to the original album releases on all 3 (I note a 69 show on the second CD of I, which just sounds phreaking awesome), instead of primarily alternate studio versions and outtakes on II and III - though the 3 previously unheard compositions on III are certainly enticing!
If you pick these up, let us know how they sound and, more importantly (to my mind), the value of the added material!/kate

OK will do. There was a feature on the radio yesterday and the question of live concerts came up. Jimmy said not to ask him, he isn't the singer. Robert said "no". I heard an alternate take of Whole Lotta Love but it was just about 20 secons though sounded pretty good- albeit on a car radio.

Led zeppelin moby dick full or explorative character, yet sustained coherency; technical execution; creative energy; and simple euphoniousness throughout, this solo is hard to beat (sorry Ginger, Billy, and Mickey)...specifically, 1:10 - 14:26 (yup, 13:16 of prime percussion!)
