I know it's kinda early, but why let DOLLAR STORES get the jump? anyway...... There's a kind of interesting story behind this one, but for now,I'll just post a clip of it. I thought this was ingenious. Whitefang

The only Christmas music I care for is one tune; White Christmas by Clyde McPhatter and the Drifters .
The whole Christmas thing to me is a huge bore. I did my whole Christmas shopping list at the Dollar Tree a few days back, I got my wife a Christmas Card, and her birthday card, which her birthday is 3 days after Christmas, cost to me $1.08, Christmas/birthday shopping done.

ELP's I Believe in Father Christmas is the one song we cover regarding the holiday.
Greg Lake and his son on guitars, Ian Anderson- of Jethero Tull- on flute.
We're getting there. Jo plays guitar, I sing and do a harp part on chromatic.

Despite not being really all that religious, I LOVE Christmas. The music, the decorations, the intended spirit and all like that. But like a lot of other "purists" I too dislike the "commercialism" that comes along with the season, and the madness in the stores and the avarice of many people in general. But my wife was not only a big fan of Christmas, but also a big fan of SANTA CLAUS and what he stood for that for the last 32 years I couldn't help but have a lot of that rub off on me. Whitefang

I was about 3 years old, and on Christmas eve, I creeped down the steps, crawling head first, and saw my parents putting the presents under the tree. I knew right then that Santa was not what "they" said he was. And when I had children I knew then that "I" was Santa Clause for those kids.

Well, as long as we're traipsing down Memory Lane------- Can't recall my age, but still young enough to believe in Santa.... at the time(it turned out) Mom was dating a guy who earned extra money playing Santa at the Sears store at which she worked. She got him to drop by one Christmas Eve night to go upstairs and check up on me and my brother. I was awake enough to hear someone"clomp" up the steps, but not knowing who it was, lay there with my eyes half opened when I first saw a black boot with white fur around it's top step in the room, then a red suit with white trim and a big white beard follow it and I laid there as quiet as possible for sure certain it was Santa himself! By the time I was 12 my Mom confessed the whole scheme. My wife told me that her older sister let her in on the Santa thing. Only she didn't tell her there was no Santa, but(get this) rather, he died in a PLANE CRASH! And tomorrow marks the 30 year acknowledgement of my starting to be the Santa at Detroit's Trapper's Alley shopping center( now the Greektown Casino). Turned out to be a really enjoyable gig. Did that for only the one Christmas. Whitefang

But we're getting away from the meat of this thread, "Christmas Tunes". I'm sure, despite how any of us feel now about the holiday, at one time or another did have carols or other tunes from the season we liked. AND hated too... A couple of my favorites( and from that FRED WARING album...... and... But too, personally, the Christmas season doesn't begin until I hear THIS one on the radio! Really, ANY version by Nat will do! Sorry for being Scroogey but I never really believed the Christmas hype much. God took my Dad when I was 4 and I think I had a hard time with any sort of Powerful Beings after that including Santa. Plus the kids I ran with mostly said otherwise than the party line.
That aside I like Charles Brown's Please Come Home for Christmas.

Seems odd to me that if you believe in a God that would take your father( for which I'm sorry to hear it was at such a young age for you) that not acknowledging the holiday that supposedly celebrates the birth of His son is off limits to you. But then again, over the years, the holiday for many became less about that than the other pageantry and nonsense. But also, even those not so filled with faith( like me) still can get into the spirit of what, to some, the holiday represents. The gathering of family and loved ones, many in some cases don't see each other any other time of year. And any other symbolic gestures of love and brotherhood. And really, there's nothing wrong with that I can see. And too, over the years, there's been many well written and deeply spiritual carols and tunes in honor of the day. Such as.... But then too, not ALL Christmas tunes are that spiritual in nature or that well composed. Like----- So, Christmas joy is like happiness in life. Others can do only so much to make it joyous for you. But only YOU can determine how joyous you can make it. For example too(and in mentioning loss earlier), Christmas was my wife's favorite time of year. She reveled in it. This will be the second Christmas I'll spend without her, but I'll still enjoy it for one main reason.... Knowing it was her favorite time of year I also know she would HATE it if anyone used her being gone as an excuse for not having an enjoyable Christmas holiday. Whitefang

To expand, I did have issues about God for a long time. In my 30's I hit bottom and nearly died. From that point I began a spiritual rebirth. I'm good with my HP now and have been for years, but the commercial aspect of Jesus' accepted birthday does rub me raw inside. Violence has happened at Black Friday mad houses. The whole idea of sales at this time of year is modern day Pharisee stuff. Gathering with family is always a great thing. Breaking bread with folks around you is a good thing too. Celebrating anything in a spiritual way is a comfort.

Like I said, how joyous Christmas is for you is UP to you. It doesn't matter what or how other people do. Give a quick idea..... I recently( and after much searching) bought myself a Fedora hat much in the late '40's-early '50's style. Always liked those hats. Well, wouldn't you know it, first time wearing it among people, many of the younger guys thought it was funny. One even tried this--- He asked, "Say, how come you just don't wear a BASEBALL cap like everybody else?" I just sighed and answered, "Jay, after all these years, you STILL don't know me? Well, the two words in the English language that can keep me from buying or doing almost anything are-- EVERYBODY ELSE!". HE came back with, "Well, I just like to keep up with the latest styles. You know, be "hip" and ' with it' ." So I recited---- "Bah-h-h Bah-h-h-h Brown sheep, have you any duds?" "Yes sir, yes sir, same kind as all my buds!" (the "brown" because he's a nephew from my wife's side, which is Mexican. ) Another Christmas favorite.... Whitefang

Well casual is casual but I do like a nice hat. Shirt. High end jeans and slacks. Good boots. To look right for promoting and gigging. In other words I clean up well! As for anyoine who has to make fun of someone else's choice of nice garb, that's their problem. Dress well and look professional.
