Speaking of essential books, Chasing the Devil's Music by Gayle Dean Wardllow has to be up there. Indeed so. It also comes with a 25 track CD half a dozen of which are short interviews conducted with people such as H.C. Spier, Booker Miller, Hayes McMullen (all discussing Patton) and Ishmon Bracy about Tommy Johnson.

Wardlow is a member of another forum I post on and his input as it relates to the blues is always refreshing and get's us back on point. I couldn't agree with you more. Between 1963 and 1969 Gayle Wardlow (as he then was) regularly submitted all his research findings to Blues Unlimited in England who then published it for him. Researched/written in US, sent to UK for publication and then shipped back to US via subscription. Due to the vast expense all went by sea not air. Bizarre state of affairs eh?
