Where do you go to buy your musical equipment?
The reason I'm inquiring, is that I've read that the Bricks and Mortar stores are rapidly becoming a thing of the past. More people are buying on-line at sites like Amazon and EBay. I was wondering who would buy a musical instrument or amplifier without first holding it, playing it (or through it), before deciding on the purchase. Kind of like buying a car...you want to test drive it first!
Can on-line stores ever completely obsolete the real brick/mortar store?

It been happening here (in the UK) for years and I agree, the end of the high street is upon us-and more is the pity. I might buy something like a pedal or mic stand on line but a guitar? Not likely. I did hget my amp on Ebay but that was second hand. Lots of folks try it out in the shop and then go home and order on line. In the end, though, we will end up with less choice as the independent stores go.

I don't feel very comfortable in GC for trying out stuff. I bought Tele from Corner Music but since have bought items from Craigs List and some online. Bought several guitars online because no one local had what I was shopping for. I had no problems as the online models were CNC machine made and had a return policy. Still I would have liked to have bought local even if a bit more price wise.

I am lucky in that I have a huge retailer in a town nearby. They are one of the biggest in the UK and their service is always great. I've been served many times there by the owner who is very down to earth and remebers me. I've spent thousands of £ there over the years. For little bits and bobs though ( i.e. strings and things) I tend to order on line- often fromn that retailer as they do a lot of mailorder. It saves a 45 minute drive.

Guitar Center is opening a second Nashville store closer to me and within a half mile of the Sam Ash store. I like the Sam Ash better but overall the GC may hurt their business. Prices are usually same or often better at Sam Ash though. Their store layout and sales persons are much better knowledge and ability wise.

There isn't a music store within 80 miles of me. If I buy any music equipment it has to be via the internet or maybe craigslist, but most craigslist ads are a long way from me.
