Any discussion of sacred music, in my opinion, begins with a study of Mahalia Jackson. As the secular blues were associated with the African-American community and it's struggle for escape from the conditions of slavery and Jim Crow, so goes one side of the sacred
side of Americana music we indentify as Gospel. No artist, more so than Mahalia, epitomizes this genre of music.
