I spotted that Tommy McClennan was born today in 1905, Durant, Mississippi In about 1965 or 1966 I purchased from a London record shop a 10 inch LP of McClennan and was enthralled by his rasping vocal. At the time for me this was real "gutbucket stuff", the like of which I'd seldom heard. Here's his rendition of Tony Hollins's Cross Cut Saw and Herr Wirz's discography www.wirz.de/music/mcclenfrm.htm

Unfortunately that photo taken by Jacques Demetre in 1950s has been misidentified when it come to McClennan - its Earl Phillips.

Has anyone advised the Mississippi Blues Foundation? It seems there may have been several errors in the history of Tommy McClennen doesn't it? www.msbluestrail.org/blues-trail-markers/tommy-mcclennan

Nature of that beast named the internet. Before too long the message will filter through. I believe Scott Dirks and Jim O'Neal have been doing their level best since early last year to put the word about. That photo first appeared in the French magazine Soul Bag to commemorate the twentieth anniversary (1983) of EJ's death. I've just noticed that I meant to say that Frenchman Yannick Bruynoghe was responsible for supplying that photo not Demetre. (I should never rush into internet print before checking what I've written)

Update: 2015
What's your favorite version of the standard, "Crosscut Saw"?
On this day, 1941, Tommy McClennan recorded the song, "Cross Cut Saw Blues" for the Bluebird label at RCA Studio A in Chicago, Illinois. Other artists to record the song, becoming better known as "Crosscut Saw" were Albert King, Johnny Young, John Hammond, Earl Hooker, Sam Chatmon, Lonnie Brooks, Otis Rush, R. L. Burnside, Eric Clapton, Carey Bell, Walter Horton, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Homesick James and dozens more. (Yes, we're aware that its Robert Petway's picture in the video and not Tommy's)
