Newport Festivals branched out in 1959 to include "Folk" music. Over the years, Johnny Cash appeared and this was from the 1963 Festival. In 1964 he performed the great Bob Dylan song - "Don't Think Twice..." (Photo courtesy Jim Marshall Photography LLC)

Newport Festivals branched out in 1959 to include "Folk" music. Not unsurprisingly Dan Morgenstern reviewing that year's event, which covered five pages in Jazz Journal (August), contains only a "post script" about the "folk element". They were the Kingston Trio, Sonny & Brownie and Memphis Slim. Speaks volumes......
