We opened with a piece written for us by Avrohom Leichtling, who came in to Boston from Rockland County, NY for the concert. The title means Bárðarbunga (a subglacial volcano) dreams under the ice.
All the pieces on the program were premières, and all four composers were in the house.

The concert having provided the occasion to get my clarinet back in reasonable practice, I wanted to sit down and play Thoreau afresh:

Well, just going to set this here . . . a jeu d'esprit, mostly (though of course, the text dates from more than 20 years since) . . .
The audio is three strands: the text, of course; the trio, which is live-plus-MIDI, an experiment in taking MIDI extractions of the "accompaniment" parts (and treating them) and recording myself playing the principal part (and, honestly, I mean to putter in just that way more in future) . . , our parakeet's good-natured interjections originated from my clarinet recording; and (treated practically beyond proper recognition) samples of myself singing, built into a kind of background choral track.
Cheers, ~k.

Partly as "practice" for a June competition in which we contestants will need to write a piece (specs to be received Day One) within two weeks' time, but more importantly so that I have a score to hand over to a local conductor this Saturday, I wrote an 11-minute piece for clarinet solo and strings, Deep Breath, in eight days. Although the MIDI in this case has a few moments even more egregious than usual, here it is:

This piece, I wrote some 13 years ago, in fact, but I needed to create a fresh "soft score" in Sibelius, so, hey, why not a MIDI demo?
