About twenty years ago my wife owned a clothing store and most of her buying trips were to Chicago, which is the Midwest US's prime wholesaling location. I'd go with her occasionally and we'd take in a blues-club or two.
I went with her once and we got in really late. We were driving around looking for some little diner or something to get a bite to eat. On one dark street, almost right under the "L" tracks on the other side, there was one sign still lit up so we stopped, there were people inside so we got out,m the door open, and went in and sat at a table. There was band-gear set up on the stage and they seemed to be taking a break, just one old guy noodling around on the piano. Someone came over and said "I'm sorry but we're closed. This is a private party." One of the guys on stage said to him "That's okay, the more the merrier. Let 'em stay if they want to." And so we ordered some food and drinks.
It turned out it was Jimmy Roger's 70th birthday party. Great music, maybe a dozen or more different musicians besides Jimmy all taking turns on the stage with each other. (I even was lucky enough to play harp for a few tunes with several of them. I always carried a Key-of-A Special-20 in my pocket.) We hung out (against my non-blueslover wife's wishes!) until about four or five in the morning and we (I) had a great time. (And didn't even have to pay for our tab!)
One of those times you'll always remember that just "happened to happen."
