I posted a rant on another bulletin board when a friend of mine also whined and complained bitterly about open mic nights. Lousy players, lousy singers, lousy songs, yadda, yadda, yadda. I got pissed. I asked which one of you grumpy old fuckers attened your first open mic nights as a fully formed performer with 20, 30, 40 years of experience ? Did you, at 16,17 or 18 not have to practice and hone your chops in front of an audience?? I agree with others here, that it is what is and will be pushing music forward. And just who the hell do you think your are shitting on someone's dream? Whether they are 15 or 50, finally following their passion. Who are you to dump on that? If it wasn't good, then they need to know they need to practice more and keep trying. There are more than enough people around in the world today who take a perverse delight in shitting on people enough to discourage what they want to do. Those are just people themselves who don't have talent or the nerve to get up on stage themselves. And the only way they can feel good about themselves is to dump on others and try and kill any asperations the open mic performers miqght have. Bullies and butt holes!! So what if my dream to play guitar at an open mic night only started when I was 60?? No rock god asperations. Just to playand sing and maybe with a couple of other people. What good reason is there to dump on that? So maybe the first time they don'tsound too good. But this arrogant dick thinks he should get a Paul Simon quality show if he deigns to show up at your club. I spent 35 years working for the soul sucking public service in Canada. I have witnessed more than enough good people have their work and ideas stolen by less talented but more politically connected asshats. And now these guys just want to strum a guitar and sing a bit. It may not be the traditional blues but when you get stepped on often enough in 35 years you can have some pretty good blues. But I digress. Let them p,ay and have fun! If you are attending an open mic night as a spectator you didn't pay any cover to get in nor are you psying full price for the beer you are drinking. So f*ck off. Go home and put your CD's on. The world and open mic nights were not created to only please you! Thank you for your time.

I don't think open mic nights have much effect on the status of live music, good or bad. They are what they are, and most of them are not all that entertaining. I used to cruise them occasionally, looking for a particular talent to add to my band, and had pretty good luck finding players that fit in with my bands. Overall though, live music has been declining. It has to do with the bar scene's changing demographics, DUI laws, and the tobacco bans. There isn't any money in it, and it's a lot of work to get abused by the bar owners and sometimes the patrons. It has also provided me with a lot of great memories, some excellent performances, and a bad back from hauling around the PA. I loved doing it for 20 years, but don't really miss it now that it's over.

If you ever get to Ottawa let me know. I won't be able to give everyone a soft bed, but I will cook up some good homemade food for y'all.
