With all of the discographical madness between myself and AlanB, I thoght I'd put this one up here. I had quite forgotten this one, but I came across it while looking in the files for something else.
The Chance 5000 (Gospel) series
The Chance label was based in Chicago, Ill. and was owned by Art Sheridan and Ewart Abner. Abner later went on to the Vee-Jay and Motown labels. The label was in operation from September 1950 to October 1954. Much of it's output was R&B although they also released Blues, Jazz and Gospel. This discography covers the Gospel series. It is ten 45 RPM records strong.

A couple of notes on the foregoing:
The Golden Tones:
Norman McQueen was never actually a member of the group. He had sung in a gospel quartet in his younger days, but by this time he was a Radio DJ who got wind of the Golden Tones. According to Loy Oliver, The Golden Tones sang in a smoother, more Group Harmony style that was out of step with, in his words, the "Stompin' And Shoutin'" that was at that time coming to the fore. Again, according to Oliver, what McQueen did was arrange for the session at the Chance label. McQueen IS the tenor on "God Is Love". The Group were young men at the time of this recording, McQueen was in his 50's according to Oliver. The label reads "Directed by N. McQueen"
The Wooten Choral Ensemble:
The Wooten Choral Ensemble, as far as I know, Is still active. Robert Wooten, Sr. has joined the great choir in the sky, but his son, Robert Wooten, Jr. was leading the ensemble last I heard.
Sister Rosa Shaw:
As far as I am able to determine, The Vocal Group on Chance 5007 is The Five Echoes. That group recorded for the Sabre label and later Vee-Jay. The Five Echoes is distinguished by the fact that Johnnie Taylor (who became a Soul star later on in the 1960's and 1970's), Earl Lewis (Of the Channels) and Tommy Hunt (later of The Flamingos) passed through on the way to bigger things.

Firstly, I would like to apologize for my most recent "MIA" status on these boards. Sometimes my Non-Internet life necessarily impinges upon my Internet life.
Secondly, as I may have stated somewhere here previously, I have put together a fair number of discographies but they were in the main done Pre-internet. They were originally created for the edification and education of myself and a few record collecting friends. The information contained within them was generally obtained through scouring music and record collecting periodicals and LP liner notes, as well as from others in my record collecting circle of friends. None of us (to our chagrin) kept scrupulous notes as to the specific source of the information. In those days, it was an epiphany just to discover a tidbit of information.
I cannot thus, verify that the Five Echoes IS the vocal group on Chance 5007 (except to say, perhaps, that it "sounds" to me like the Five Echoes on aural evidence alone).
I would like to point out that the "pianist from Greenville, South Carolina named Eskew Reeder" who was on the road with Rosa Shaw was indeed Eskew Reeder, Jr./Steven Quincy Reeder Jr./S.Q. Reeder/Esquerita/The Magnificent Malochi/Fabulash who recorded for the Capitol, Minit, Instant, Okeh and Brunswick labels in the 1950's and 1960's. He continued to perform live into the early 1980's until he died of AIDS in 1986. His time on the Capitol Records label was initiated by Rock And Roll artist, Gene Vincent who brought him to their attention. Esquerita was to be Capitol's version of Little Richard, just as Gene Vincent was Capitol's Elvis Presley.
In case you (or, indeed, anyone else) is interested in Esquerita, I add his 45 discography to these proceedings.
The Esquerita US 45 Discography
Baton #216 Didn't It Rain/Your God Is My God; 1955 The Heavenly Echoes (this was a gospel group that Esquerita had been a member of)
Capitol #4007 Oh Baby/Please Come Home; 1958 Esquerita (According to Esquerita, it was Gene Vincent who brought him to the attention of Capitol Records. It has been said that The Capitol Label wanted their own Little Richard and so, signed Esquerita. In much the same way as Gene Vincent was said to be Capitol's Elvis Presley)
Captol #4058 Rockin' The Joint/Esquerita And The Voola; 1958 Esquerita
Capitol #4145 Laid Off/Just Another Lie; 1959 Esquerita
Capitol #1075/1076 Hey Miss Lucy/Battie Over Hattie; 1959 Esquerita (This record was an apparently promo only release by Capitol in support of the LP "Esquerita!" "A" side catalog number is PRO 1075. "B" side catalog number Is Pro 1076.)
Minit #648 Green Door/Waited So Long; 1962 Eskew Reeder (Big Joe Turner is credited with bringing Equerita to The Minit Label. According to Esquerita, Irma Thomas Is a background vocalist on "Waited So Long")
Minit #658 Never Again/We Had Love; 1962 Eskew Reeder
Instant #3258 The Flu/Undivided Love; 1963 Eskew Reeder, Jr.
Instant #3268 I Woke Up, Pt.1/I Woke Up, Pt. 2; 1963 Eskew Reeder, Jr.
Everest #2025 A Tear/Johnny Little; 1963 Eskew Reeder
Okeh #7239 I Want To Know/Just In Time; 1966 S. Q. Reeder (Stephen Quincy Reeder, Jr. is Esquerita's real name.)
Okeh #7254 Tell The World About You/Two Ton Tessie; 1966 S. Q. Reeder
Brunswick #55359 Mama You're Daddy's Come Home/As Time Goes By; 1968 Magnificent Malochi (Magnificent Malochi was a pseudonym of Esquerita. Dr. John [Mac Rebbanack] is playing keyboards on these recordings, according to Esquerita)
Crosstone #1007 Dew Drop In/You Better Believe Me; 1969 Esquerita (the Crosstone label was part of the Columbia Complex. This material has been reported to have been recorded in 1967. Esquerita is quoted as saying it was recorded in 1969.)
