Are there great blues players in your city whom you've had the opportunity to see frequently? Are they known to the rest of the world?
Where I live, Dallas, there are a couple of standouts.
Specifically, Lucky Peterson has lived here for a long time, and I've been fortunate to see him very many times. Amazing on both keyboards and guitar, he's one of the best in the blues field, in my opinion. Unfortunately, he mostly tours of late, and appearances in his home town have become infrequent.
The other, who is rather less known, and tends to sporadically appear throughout town, is Tutu Jones. In the last few years, I've seen him several times, and he's really a brilliant guitar player and a fine singer. A standout performer, he should be much better known.

Great topic kh. Small town in SW Virginia doesn't have any name blues artists, but we have some great buskers that do great covers.

Very surprisingly, Champion Jack Dupree lived for a time in Halifax, about 25 miles from here. I think he had an English girlfriend. During this time I saw him at a gig at Manchester University. He sang and played a nice grand piano in an acoustically good small room and the only percussion was the rings on his fingers against the wood of the piano. As you might imagine, he was entirely self sufficient and didn't need a backing group. He was also great to talk with.

The local legends around these parts are the Climax Blues Band. 70s cheese aside, when they were actually playing blues they were pretty good.

Going back in time, the great Freddie King lived in Dallas when I was in high school, and I had the good fortune to hear him live one time.

Agreed KH...Freddie (along with the other two Kings ) was great. I lived in Memphis for several years in the 50's and 60s and we had a couple of good blues artists come through town.

There's 95 people in my town, 2000 in the whole county and not one blues player.

Not recently, but I've seen Sue Foley live a couple of times--I recollect her playing some Earl Hooker instrumentals that sounded rather good. I quite liked her guitar playing, but her singing at the time (this was early in her career) wasn't so good.

With my being from the "arm-pit" of North Carolina, there ain't that many blues pickers living out here in the trailer park. But, we do have a few "good ole' boys" that can tear it up occasionally. This guy "Unknown Hinson" (real name is Danny Baker) is from Albemarle, NC (14 miles down Hwy 73 from my place). He is a hoot and plays a mean guitar. The bass player is Roger Kohrs and does live about 2 miles from my single wide. Drummer is Billy Scott....and he lives over in China Grove, NC. Billy ran sound for my country band several times back in the 90s.......plus he filled in on drums a couple of times when our drummer couldn't make a show (locked up!)
Take a little listen to a good guitar tone for a country redneck trying to play rock/blues.
Later
Steve

Along the same thought pattern, who is the most famous blues artist or band you have met?

I met Buddy Guy at a small club in the mid-1980s. He was very nice.

Crossing a congested boulevard with stationary traffic in Paris in about 1972 I spotted Memphis Slim at the wheel of a purple open-top sports car. "Mr Memphis Slim!" I declared, proffering my hand. He took it rather cautiously (after all, his living depended on his hands!) and, exaggerating slightly, I said, "I buy all your records in England" and continued on my way.
