Happy New Year 2016. Even though some of us had a bit of tough luck in 2015, we can look forward to this year being a better one. Today, I am remembering those New Year's Days when there would be a big pot of peas, seasoned with a piece of hamhock or hogs jowl, simmering on the old wood cookstove. Mama would have gone out to the garden early and picked a big bucket of turnip greens, rinsed them well to get off the grit and dirt, brought up to a boil and pouring that liquid off, then seasoning with some side meat, and cooking the greens down until they were sweet and tender. Yep, peas for luck, greens for money and pork for food in the coming year. You may not be superstitious but as far back as I can remember, we always had what we needed each year - so even though I may be a little skeptical about the power of the peas, greens, pork and cornbread, I'll spend this New Year's Day enjoying the food!
