I thought it might be worthwhile to walk through how I write a song complete with the stuff I use to record, edit and save for posting.
First of all, I use my cellphone now to great advantage. I have an app "Audio Recorder" which I carry everywhere. It allows me to record my thoughts fresh when I have them. For example today I got the thought about something my wife has said over and over - Actions speak louder than words.
So when I was sitting in the parking lot at the grocery store while my wife went inside, I began to formulate a song. As I came up with some lyrics a melody began to form in my mind based on the metre of the song. I recorded those lyrics using my cellphone and the Audio Recorder app. As I think of new lyrics, i repeat the process.
I then save those recordings to Google Drive (My Drive).
When I get back to my laptop, I open the google drive and download to my laptop the lyrics I just wrote and save in a folder labled with my new song title.
Next I use a program (free) "Audacity". www.google.com/search?q=audacity+download&rlz=1C1CHBF_enUS701US701&oq=audacity&aqs=chrome.1.69i57j0l5.3621j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8
I can now import into Audacity the clips I just wrote. If necessary, I can piece them according to how they best fit. At the same time, you can analyze your voice and get the key.
I continue to edit the lyrics until I have a rough song. Now in Audacity I can add tracks as needed. For instance, I can add a guitar track that fits my song key. Add fills, intro, outro, etc.
Then I add drum tracks, keyboards, etc
Save the file.
Export as a MP3 file.
then go to Soundcloud.com and if you don't have an account, create one. Upload the MP3 file and get the link.
Share it with everyone.
Simple, isn't it.
So, here's the first lyrics I recorded this morning in the Kroger parking lot:

And when I sat down and began to flesh out the song, these are the lyrics I came up with .
Angry words when we fight
cut so much deeper than a knife.
Hear the door slam, you’re leavin’ me alone
Cause I’m sorry doesn’t seem to satisfy
Baby’s gone what’d I say
Those words drove her away
Sounds of emptiness
Are all that’s left tonight
Now I know those words
Weren’t worth the fight
Baby’s gone what’d I say
Baby’s gone what’d I say
Baby’s gone what’d I say
Those words drove her away
Now, for my last post of the day...here's the first edit with music (patterned after Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Tuesday's Gone". Note: I have a lot of editing and re=recording to do before it's a real song. But this will show the progression to date. (All io the first day). I'll change the lyrics and redo the melody numerous times before I put it down.
