So many great R&B and Rock and Roll artists have come from New Orleans, among them, professor Longhair, Smiley Lewis, Chuck Carbo, Fats Domino, The Spiders. One more great N.O. artist who's under the radar these days, is Wee Willie Wayne. Here's an example of one of Wee Willie Wayne's best recordings. This one features whistling. Let's see and/or hear your New Orleans favorites.

Nice choice, James. Fats Domino had so many hits worth hearing. Even his non-hits are fantastic.

One more for tonight. James' Fats Domino post made think about the man behind all of the fat man's Imperial label recordings, Dave Bartholomew. Trumpeter/Singer/Songwriter/Arranger/Producer/Label Owner. Bartholomew did it all over the years. The royalty of N.O. R&B and Rock And Roll have Dave Bartholomew to thank for the success they had.
Here's a good one.

Here's another R&B vocal group put together by Dave Bartholomew. This time Bartholomew took a Gospel group, called The Humming Four, who been together since the 1930's, and matched them with a young pianist/vocalist named Allen "Fats" Matthews. They recorded as "The Hawks" for several years and although the never had hit, they were quite popular in New Orleans. They did manage to record some very good vocal group sides.

Professor Longhair (or Roy Byrd, if you prefer) was the grandfather of New Orleans Rock & Roll and R&B. Allan Toussaint, Dr. John and many others have claimed the professor as a major influence on their style.
