After reading the post about the portable studio. I was just wondering how many of you record your self? I've had this Yamaha studio recorder for years. Has more crap than I'll ever need but all the lights look neat. Lately we've been recording our practices and I've got to say it's great. We seem to be getting tighter picking out our own tracks and knowing what we need to work on. Also the room noise is down 100%, so we can go on later into the night. If you don't use one give it a try and you'll notice a huge difference. Hope to have a couple of songs up shortly mostly covers right now.

We record everything we do each weekend, on a 24 track digital recorder. But I rarely have the time or interest to listen to the tracks back again, so I don't. Too many mistakes and loose grooves when you're playing live, and that just frustrates me. When we get serious and sit down to really record something, then it can get interesting.

What with the snow storm, getting my income tax ready and a couple other not particularly glamorous jobs I've had to focus on, I haven't fired up my porta studio, but I am a great believer in the value of recording stuff in the process of working it out. It's particularly helpful working out harmonies on vocals. I know I'll use the machine heavily in the near future. Serious recording with the meter running can be stressful, Recording practices can be fun and helps me to hear changes that I want to make.

OK...now who has the guts to post their practice. Remember, I posted my learning curve on the classical piece Herb gave me to do!

We record our rehearsals a lot-often they sound awful and sometimes we record arguments and we all laugh about them afterward.

I hope this doesn't get old to you guys? I was messing around with my recorder. Yamaha AW-4416. 16 tracks, records 8 at once, effects and a bunch of other crap I don't use. (becasue I can't figure it out) Anyway I was messing around with it tonight and found an old CD I had used to pracitce backing up, well I did it. Back in 2003. Just listend to it. Man I should be a millionaire. I had just started back up playing after a long time of just looking at my guitar. (almost 20 yrs) So I wanted to see if I could record some songs with this 3 manual recorder I just picked up. So I installed the CD and it sounded pretty good to me. I'm playing an acoustic and singing Lucky Man and Ripple. With voice over dubbs. Can't wait to play for my friends.

I still haven't had the time to try out my new pocket Studio Tascam. I have practice on Thursday, but I'll be in the studio most of tomorrow, so I don't know if I'll get a chance to try it out before Thursday

Hey, Jim: I had a recording session today that functioned pretty much as a practice. We tried several different approaches to the song, I ended up playing acoustic guitar instead of electric, and my studio man/producer asked me to spur of the moment add harmonies, which I did. It's a little ragged, because I was winging it on harmonies, with no practice. I'll see if I can post the recording on here, warts and all. I ain't proud. I always find the process fascinating.

As threatened, here is today's practice session for a new recording I'm working on. This is definitely a work in progress. We changed the arrangement several times, and my friend Paul asked me to add harmonies, spur-of-the moment, just to see how it might sound. The harmony tracks will be re-done by my friends who are coming to the house to work on real harmonies, tomorrow. You asked for it. I'll post the final version when we finish. The song i May My Heart Find Rest in Thee. I rwote this one twenty or more years ago, and while others have recorded it, this is the first time for me. link
