Pretty good article there Jim. If you look up "sheng" on youtube you get some very interesting hits on simple bamboo instruments which are in their way as expressive as the modern harmonica.
One big thing lately is low and very low toned harmonicas in the blues and jump/swing arenas. And straight up bass harmonica is another that has a place in current blues oriented music as well.
I use a few low keyed harps here and there but the very low are more expensive for me. Still, the low tuned C, D, Eb, and F are good axes for certain stuff. Mostly I play them through an amp since they don't have big volume at the instrument, like say a regular C or D.
