A true icon of New Orleans music. Voodoo, jazz, blues, rock, name it he was there. Played with dozens of great over many years. Never did things to staleness. His album Right Place Wrong Time was like nothing I'd ever heard when it came out in the early 70's.
There went a REAL MAN.

In '68, local "hippie" FM radio station WABX started playing tracks off of "Gris-Gris", his "debut" LP. That stuff was so different from the usual fare on the station( which really didn't have a " usual fare") we really dug it! Back then, he billed himself as DR. JOHN, "The Night Tripper." Turned out FIVE OTHER of his band members also billed themselves as "Dr." Dig: RIP DR. Whitefang

The AVA. American Voodoo Association!
I remember in the early 70's trying to fit a harp part into some of his work. Not easy even for a pro which I was not. Decades later I could possibly add something to some of the stuff on In the Right Place.
