What role do you see the bass playing in today's music? Does it vary by genre?
For me, the bass was always the primary instrument to lay down the basic beat. Now, admittedly we didn't use drums back before the invention of fire, but what about today?

To me it( trhe bass) has been the bridge between the rhythm and the tune but I do think, as you have pondered Jim, that it can very according to genre-inasmuch as how it affects. If you look at reggae, for example, thebass plays an enormous part in that. As a former bass player I am very aware of the importance of getting the rhythm right.

The roll of the bass depends, of course, on the musical context. But I tend to like it when the bass plays a fundamental role in holding down the pulse, in addition to whatever else it is doing. That frees up the drums and other instruments to play syncopated rhythms around the pulse and against the pulse.
