How far below standard \can you tune before you need to change strings - Particularly the lower three wound strings? I've heard that anything more than 4 half-tones you need to go to heavier gauge strings...true or false?

Jim, that's a fairly safe assumption, but it depends on several factors, like what guage strings are you starting out with (maybe they're already heavy guage); also the action set-up on the guitar, and the scale length of the neck, (For example a shorter scale length has less tension on it for a given note than a longer scale length.) and even fret-height (newer or higher frets are different than older or low "fast" frets.) So it's kind of guitar-specific as far as how low you can go before the strings start to buzz or "fret-out" when played or held.

I guess I am thinking more about the natural resonance of the string gauge. Heavier gauges are naturally resonant at lower frequencies, ergo lower tunings?
