I've always used the minor minor pentatonic scale, blues scale, and Diminished scales. And just started using the major pentatonic, which breaks up the sound nice. I found it easier to try and learn a box pattern and move it up and down the guitar neck, for different keys. Still trying to gain the concept of the modes though. There's a pretty good book, Scales and Modes by Ron Middlebrook, which seems to help me. But as we all know, playing scales can be quite boring.

"There's only twelve notes, and they're all good." - George Benson George Benson seemed to play a lot more than 12 notes. Which got me thinking. I had a teacher who wanted me to sing the notes, which made no scence at the time. BUT it did a while later. I can hear Gearge singing and playing his notes for his solos.

OK... Why do we even call them 'guitar' scales?
When you write them out on a page, they are musical scales and can be played on a lot of musical instruments. I hope you don't think I'm just quibbling, but sometimes guitarists get so self-centric and forget that there are lots of instruments that we can play with.
I grew up playing in guitar bands for many years, and it wasn't until many years later that I got the opportunity to play with keyboardists, harp and horn players, other stringed instruments, etc. And I learned that we need to learn to not only play with them, but to converse in terms that they understand so we can reach the common goal, to make great music together.
