Let's take A minor key per example.. Notes of the scale are A B C D E F G and it continues through octaves. Chords are: 1st degree A min (A C E) 2nd degree B dim (B D F) 3rd degree C maj (C E G) 4th degree D min (D F A) 5th degree E min (E G B ) 6th degree F maj (F A C) 7th degree G maj (G B D)
Now some of the most common combinations:
A min F maj G maj A min A min D min G maj A min A min D min E min A min A min F maj C maj G maj etc...

Or why not just A min D min E 7 ??
Not that the maj 7's are bad. They are fantastic. But some songs need a simpler solution.

I agree Celeste, I was just opening up the conversation with some of the more common progressions. Personally, I love the emotions of the 7th chords. Then there's the very jazzy dorian based riff (think Santana) Am7-D7-F#m7b5-C Play the Am for 4 beats the D7 for 2 beats then 1 beat each for the F#m7b5 and the C major then repeat. Or as you say, keep it simple - A min D min E7. smiley-music014

It just depends on what sound you want. I used to use a young man to accompany me when I did festivals playing my Native American flutes. To start with he did simple chords. Then he learned how to play all sorts of major 7th flat 13ths with electric drum rolls or other such nonsense. It no longer worked. All I have on the flute is 5 notes. Each flute plays a minor pentatonic scale in it's own key. I have to have multiples to play in different keys.
I also like the progressions you have suggested. Well the first one. I haven't sat down and looked at the second one yet.

I'll dig around on my computer and find some mp3's to send you. If you pm me your email address, I'll be glad to send you some mp3's. I guess I should put some of these on youtube. My favorite song of these is "Butterfly Dance". You can listen to some samples here: www.amazon.com/Enchanted-Meadow-Celeste-Matthews/dp/B00104B9LO

Cool. Thanks. I'll check out that thread. I need to get back to recording some of the flute stuff. Since I don't have the kid to take around with me, I haven't been playing at festivals lately. I took him under my wing to help him get up confidence. He is a better musician than I will ever be, but he was terrified of audiences. I talked and encouraged and now he is studying classical guitar in college. He is 26 years old. He probably would not have gone to college if my husband and I had not encouraged him. It's a good feeling.
