How much of your setup do you do and how much do you get someone else to complete?
And how do you check the setup? What type of tuner?
How do you set up your guitar to get perfect intonation. Having your guitar “in tune” is a perfect goal for any luthier or the guitarist himself. Poor intonation can be heard whenever we play a chord or play solo on high frets. But you can tune your guitar to achieve a more powerful sound than ever.

Well I do most of my own setting up though it tends to be "on the hoof", i.e. as and when needed. I have a friend who is a set up genius if I ever find myself unable to get it right but that is rare. All depends upon the condition of the guitar. For example, my old Strat was forever needing little tweaks and tucks as the neck was worn and the frets needed replacing. I was forever messing with it until I bit the bullett and had a re fret. Now, I just need to mess around once in a blue moon. My Tele is a bit more high maintenance in that the vintage bridge needs to be adjusted a bit but it is easy enough. But every now and then I give a guitar to my friend and he knows what I klike and it comes back reborn.

Which tuner or other apparatus do you use to verify the intonation and at which fret?

I don't know what he does (I'll have to ask) but I just use a tuner and press down at the 12th fret and then adjust as required. The Strat I mentioned earlier was one that I had to do often but the strange thing is, whenever I sorted out the intonation, it was a bugger to tune. That must have been because the neck just wasn't right anymore. So I used to have to "cpmpromise" on the intonation. Another odd thing was that when it was in tune according to a tuner, it wasn't according to my ears. I remember I had to tune the B and the G slightly flat. Of coourse that all changed once the re fret was done and the neck was refinished by shaving off a tiny amount of wood to even out the popitting that my fingers must have cause over 30 years or so.

I do most of my own set ups on the electrics. Haven't really had to mess with my acoustics. And I do a really good cleaning when changing the strings.
