Who prefers fretless bass over the fretted ones?
I've heard people state that country music requires fretted bass, but when it was all acoustic the double bass (standup bass) didn't have frets and we did pretty good! I personally love the freedom of the fretless and the benefit of no fret buzz.
Now, I admit, I am not a bassist even though I've played one a few times on stage. Perhaps you "real" bass players can weigh in.

I prefer fretted bass to unfretted. I have played un fretted quite a few times and can't say I had any difficulty but I prefr frets. I am an old school bass guitar player.
I do occasionally get a chance to play upright but that is another kettle of fish.

I too like an upright bass though I sadly don't geta chance to play one that ofetn. There is a chap who occasionally brings one to the open mic nights at a local pub and it is always good when he does- that lovely warm bass sound is great. He also lets me have a little noddle around on it.

There have been some really good advances over the years getting the sound of an upright bass more audible. I guess it is in the acoustic pickups. I heard a jazz trio recently and the upright bass player had a great and very up front sound with the piano and guitar.
