Lunceford knew how to please both casual & "serious" listeners. A case in point-the sound of arrangers such as Sy Oliver."For Dancers Only" stands up as dance & art.Ditto for "Lunceford Special" The Lunceford Orchestra covers of Ellington material (Sophisticated Lady, Mood Indigo) are also notably successful. Personally I prefer Jimmie Lunceford's dance music to Benny Goodman's-but there's no accounting for taste, is there?
