What is it with guys over 50 always wanting to play loud? Todays amps do come with a volume control.

I don't know why some do that. Well I can guess having dealt with that in the past.... Band or person can get a good full sound at a moderate volume level and if band stays around that and uses dynamics and nuance will sound much better. Best to only bring volume levels up a bit for certain parts of songs then reduce for most parts. Most audiences like that even if punk or metal music.

Acoustic gigs don't use amps.

I went to see Los Lobos in Nashville years ago and the sound person ruined the show by turning up the sound way too much. It turned their sound into a blare. I wonder if the band knew how it sounded in the audience. It was a fairly large hall - 328 Performance Hall.

It is an ego rush for some people. They think louder is better. I really don't want to lose my voice trying to strain over a loud band. That's one reason I'm not playing in a full band right now. If you tell them to turn it down, they get furious. If I put together a full band again, I am going to discuss volume before the first rehearsal.

Time to tell them to *politely* to pursue their *quest* elsewhere as not what needed here, "Thanks and very best wishes".

I was out and about this last weekend. The town had a huge music fest. Lots and music and good food. It did seem taht the bands playing inside were a lot louder than the ones outside. You would think that they would get the hint when people started leaving the place to go outside. I just don't get it.

As people reach 50 and beyond, they're losing a little more of their hearing each year. Any chance some of them might be turning up just to compensate for their own loss of hearing?

I don't know if it is the over 50's though. I played with another band recently for two gigs (filling in for their guitarist) and they were much much louder than my band. They were all in their 30's too.
