If you can find some of his recordings, a musician named Blind Blake (Blind Blake, last name Higgs, not THE Blind Blake Phelps!) did some excellent tunes back in the 50s. His was the house-band for awhile at the Royal Victoria Hotel in Nassau. (A prime "honeymoon" destination back then, quite a few of his recordings (sold in the hotel) made it into the US and UK.)
His version of the folk-song "Sloop John B" was basically the version the Beach Boys were influenced by.
I used to do ("tried to do" is a better choice of words!) his tune "Jones, Oh Jones" for awhile. (Memorizing the lyrics is as hard or harder than actually playing the tune!)
A couple of his tunes have also been covered by Dave Van Ronk, Paul Geremia and Pete Seeger.
Anyway, great stuff if you can find it.

Glad you like him, Jim.
Yeah, I was turned onto his stuff about twenty-five years ago by my friend Paul Geremia. I tried to bid on one of his original records on ebay a couple of years ago, but when the bids went over a hundred dollars, my maximum bid, it was too rich for me! I'll get by with my "copies-of-copies!"
Anyway, he did some pretty good stuff. (And I'm generally a purely blues-guy!)
