Rhythm seems to me to be the backbone or skeleton of music. To me, you can tap the rhythm with your feet, play it on a drum or bass, or just strum it on a guitar, but the rhythm tells me a lot about the music. Last Sunday, I heard a church praise band playing a little of Bob Marley's One Love with a few of the lyrics changed. But the important thing was, when you hear the first few beats, you know it's Reggae and Bob Marley. From the polyrhythms of the African people brought to America, to the syncopation of Jazz and Blues, rhythm is extremely important to the success of a musical compositon in my opinion. Perhaps the most singular important element - or close to it. How many forms of rhythm used in music do you know? Porchboards and feet stomping... Next???

Rhythm is the soul of the music. For a band to sound good, the rhythm section has to be tight. I have played in a band with a bad drummer, and it didn't really matter what else happened, the music was still bad. I guess I needed the money bad to hang on to that one..........

Celeste, it is ironic how much the need for sustenance overcomes the need for keeping time! smiley-laughing024
