I don't disagree with him that popular music in America is not what it used to be, although I would say that the decline really began later, as media and interactive gaming of various sorts largely replaced music as a priority in the life of most people.
He writes about "stacking the cards" when he compares Benny Goodman with "House" or Billy Strayhorn with Drake. Yea, he stacked them alright. Something tells me that he does not understand the first thing about House or Hip Hop music, and couldn't distinguish between serious artistic endeavors in that arena and purely commercial garbage.
The fact is, we have always had a lot of dreadful commercial garbage on the radio. Even Benny Goodman played it sometimes, as he himself was very much aware.
