Smalls Jazz Club You must register a valid email address along with a password in order to view the nightly performances. I'd like to add, I really missed watching the nightly gigs when the owner decided to start charging for nightly viewing. Now once again, it's free! Check it out. Very cool stuff.

Well, it was only $5 a month, but it is indeed now free. Last night was an amazing solo bass concert by Charnett Moffett, and tonight a fabulous performance by Ari Hoenig's group is in progress now.

Tonight, there is the Spike Wilner Trio. I've really grown to enjoy his piano playing from watching the Smalls broadcasts, hearing the Smalls Live releases on which he performs, and in person at Smalls. He's a real two handed piano player, who has a wide range of styles from early jazz to modern.
Christmas night, the Peter Bernstein group with Steve Nelson, Dwayne Burno and Billy Drummond looks good. Late night is a group led by Craig Wuepper with ex-Jazz Messenger David Schnitter on tenor saxophone.
Thursday night, guitarist Peter Bernstein is back, followed by Tyler Mitchell, a fine bassist, with Ed Cherry (ex-Dizzy Gillespie sideman) on guitar.
Friday and Saturday, the dynamic alto player, Mike DiRubbo, leads a group including Josh Evans on trumpet, Brian Charette on piano and Ugonna Okegwo on bass. I heard a similar group at Smalls this past year, and they were real good.
Also on Saturday, David Schnitter leads his quartet. His release on Smalls Live might be his best recording.

Spike Wilner's group was pretty good last night; he was joined by tenor saxophonist Joel Frahm.

I just wanted to bump this topic to let folks know who may or not be in the know, Smalls is a jazz club in NY City which features live jazz performances on a nightly basis. Some good stuff lately. I was able to watch performances by Tad Schull with Rob Schneidermann and John Webber. Dmitry Baevsky and someone that would interest both members John T and Bill F, Harry Allen. Coming up later this week performances by Tardo Hammer with Jimmy Wormworth and the George Burton Group featuring Tim Warfield. In order to view the live performances you must register an account with Smalls and you'll be good to go. Again it's all free and you can't beat that. Here's the link: www.smallsjazzclub.com/indexnew.cfmLet me also add, I will attempt to post performances of upcoming shows that might be of interest here on Talk Music Forum.

The George Burton Group with the addition of Terrell Stafford/trumpet is smoking tonight. Stafford's playing is unbelievable. The guy could blow the roof off the joint if he wanted to.

Just took a look at Smalls at 3:10 A.M. your time and they were still blowin'! The thing about that show Bill, was the band was full of energy. Some of the playing especially by Stafford and Warfield was pretty intense. The audience which sometimes can be on the mellow side, was quite enthusiastic and roared there approval at times. At one point I remember seeing the audience standing after one of there performances. Great show. Maybe one of the best I've viewed from Smalls. Hopefully they will add this one to the audio archives.

The big names had gone home by the time I tuned in. I must remember to give it a look on one of my very early mornings.
