Is the sound of a semi-hollowbody guitar significantly different from that of an equivalent solid body?
Hollow body and semi-hollow guitars have a fuller, more rounded sound, but less attack. Solid body will have a brighter crisper tone in my opinion.

Of course each has their own sound preferences, but I'm definitely a hollow-body guy (or semi-hollow)when I do play electric. I put down my Tele and Les Pauls years ago, except in those instances where that's the specific sound I need to have. To, me nothing beats the richness, warmth, sustain and natural overdrive of a good hollow-body.

I'm not sure I could tell the difference from listening to a recording, but I definitely prefer playing hollow and semi hollow guitars. I think the plankiness of solid bodies is what stops them feeling right to me.

I'll throw a little bit of confusion into this thread...
Which guitar do you believe sounds better for flatpcking? Acoustic or electric?
To me, a flatpicked song needs the full harmonics of the acoustic...a pickup/amp just doesn't do it! The same holds true for some of the old country blues songs performed by the likes of Son House, Charley Patton, etc.

I'll throw a little bit of confusion into this thread... Which guitar do you believe sounds better for flatpcking? Acoustic or electric? Son......did you slip down during the snow and hit your head? A dadgum "sweet tater" would know the answer to that'un. You've got to have a good sounding dreadnought acoustic if you're going to tackle flatpicking.......hehe......plus you've got to have a set of "straings" that run from 13 to 56 on the low E. Cain't have no flimsy pick. It's got to be the thickness of at least a quarter (maybe a dime)..........sheeeesh......flatpicking on a 'lectric guitar. I'm gonna pray for you tonight......lol As far as the thread topic goes, I prefer the sound of a solid body electric. I've got a 1948 Gretsch that is hollowbody and I don't think it would cut it in the music I play. I do think the 335s and such do sound good on softer music and slow songs.....but if I were in that situation, I would probably just close mic a good acoustic. Yep----just give me a solid body Tele and I'll make do with it.

yes-sir.......where was that Malmsteen feller back then? Roy's playing some off the wall Fender product, strung with Black Diamonds 11 - 52, using a 1922 Silver Dollar for a pick, and didn't "dive bomb" with the pump handle nary a time!
