Steve Cropper was the house band guitarist for Stax Records, and his great "Green Onions" still sounds great to me.
Now some call this Rock and roll, others may call it R&B or even Jazz

He did a lot at Stax. He also did A&R there, and co-wrote many hits like "Knock On Wood" with Eddie Floyd, "In the Midnight Hour" with Wilson Pickett and "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay" with Otis Redding. It's a little sad (but not completely, he deserves the recognition in general) that many know him from the Blues Brothers band. I don't have anything against the Blues Brothers. Great player and writer. I only wish we could have heard the reunited Booker T and the MGs with Jones, Dunn, Cropper and Jackson.

So true There aren't many people outside Memphis who really knew Steve. They may have known "of him" thru his work with Stax and all of the artists who passed through there. The website is a great place to learn more. playitsteve.com/?workprojects=the-whole-story

He put the most into a song by putting the least amount of guitar into it. What a talent.

I too love his playing. I couldn't agree more with the "less is more" comments - he always plays with taste and skill and I've knicked so many of his ideas it isn't true.
