I was rummaging through a bargain bin of jazz albums last night and ran across this gem. I've always loved Fats Waller and this two disc album contains quite a collection of his works. Released in 2006 by Definitive Records, this set of his works show his technique (which in my opinion is as good as Tatum's), his warmth and charm, and finally, when you listen the second time, you realize the genius that was Fats Waller.

I agree-these are marvelous as is much of Fats' Victor material.
Inspired by the book "Rhythm is our Business", I ordered the 4CD Proper Box "Jimmie Lunceford: Strictly Lunceford" and have been hooked ever since. I can imagine why the Lunceford Band was popular with both dancers & "serious" listeners especially given the high quality arrangements and soloists such as Eddie Durham, Willie Smith, Snooky Young among others. Highly recommended.

Basie Swings Bennett Sings. Neglected gem of a session.
Tony Bennett: The Complete Improv Sessions-this is what SHOULD happen when you let an artist direct his career choices.
Ben Webster: Kind of Webster. 10 CD import spanning Bean's career. Discs 9 & 10 "And Jazz Legends, Volumes 1 & 2"offer some nice surprises as does #7 "Big Man In A Small Band". A more than worthwhile investment of time & money. The latter kicks off with a marvelously tough 'n tender reading of "Blue Skies", a favorite standard of mine since I heard the Ella Fitzgerald/ Harry Edison collaboration. I do love Webster's playing in all settings except for a "Ben Webster With Strings" session, which suffers from the same problems as do similar projects.

THen there's Proper Box's Roy Eldridge: Jazz Giant, featuring some of his finest 30s small group work w/Chu Berry, which is complimented nicely by Verve's "Little Jazz: The Best of The Verve Years"
Benny Carter's "Music Master", another 4CD Proper Box set, collects some of Benny's finest work with The Chocolate Dandies et.al in one spot. A good introduction to a unique talent.
