We normally discuss Leadbelly as a "Blues" singer, but for sure, he contributed much to Folk. For example, Rock Island Line was resurrected during the folk revival of the 60s.
Here's a video of Leadbelly
(I don't own the copyright to this video,it is provided for educational purposes only)
and then as resurrected by the Weavers in 1960s

We normally discuss Leadbelly as a "Blues" singer, but for sure, he contributed much to Folk. In 1989 I was asked to knock out a few words for a Leabelly LP sleeve note, I commenced it thus: Leadbelly was in a class of his own, not a blues singer per se, more a songster who could - and did - perform anything. He would stomp, strut, finger drum, shout, holler, tell stories, pump a windjammer and play his twelve-string guitar. It was probably for such reasons that he was lionised by the white folk circles of the Forties, but caused him to be ostracised as an "Uncle Tom" by the emergent blues critics of the Sixties. Only recently have fans (and commentators) come to accept that what Leadbelly sang, played and performed was based on, and was part of, a pre-blues tradition.
