( Chase the Blues ) Tim Kaihatsu, an innovative and versatile guitarist who toured for years with the Robert Cray Band, and was also a teacher at Millenium High School in Piedmont, has died. Mike Kappus, a legendary music agent who will be inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in May, and Christoffer Lund Andersen, a noted Bay Area guitarist, both reported hearing from Kaihatsu's family and associates. "I understand he's been teaching and didn't show up yesterday (Monday)," said Kappus, "So they sent someone to his house to check on him and he was found dead." Kaithatsu taught economics, U.S. and world history, and coached the basketball team at Millenium, according to the school's website. He was a UC-Berkeley graduate. Kaithasu was noted among music fans for often playing an antique Silvertone guitar when with the Cray band. He played with a clean, warm tone that was partly made possible by the Silvertone's DanElectro pick-ups. In later years he may have switched to playing Gibson and other guitars. Plans are being discussed to hold a tribute for Kaihatsu. -- The Daily News
