I've never bought a full-fledged Mosaic, but only Selects (all of which I'm happy with). Mosaic currently has a 10% off deal on certain boxes, and I'm considering the Hank Mobley. I have 5 CDs with Hank as leader (the earliest being Soul Station (1960)), and a bunch of '50s recordings with him as sideman. Enjoy them all. I'm hesitating only because I've seen the Mosaic described as mostly being 1950s "Prestige-type blowing sessions", and I'm really full on run-of-the-mill, uninspired blowing sessions. Any love for the Mobley set? Are the sessions good/inspired?

I have it. Perhaps I have more love for the Prestige-style blowing sessions than you Tom, but these sessions are more than that - in typical Blue Note fashion they are better organized and arranged with tighter performances.
It's a great set overall, well worth your investment. The opening quartet session with Mobley, Silver, Watkins and Blakey is worth the price of the set. It's one of the great Mobley recordings IMO. And then as you move through the set, you get plenty of variety with sidemen such as Milt Jackson, Lee Morgan, Pepper Adams, Kenny Dorham, Sonny Clark, Art Taylor, etc. Inspired? - yes. They're studio sessions, but never dull. Good? - They're beyond good, really. Sound is generally very good, though the session with Milt Jackson is not one of van Gelder's better efforts. It's OK, but the vibes sound a bit wonky at times, almost like they're under water or something. But this is a minor complaint. If you like the Mobley you already have, you'll enjoy this set.

Thanks, John. I really ought to get this - Hank/Silver/Watkins/Blakey, Lee Morgan, KD, Sonny Clark are self-recommending to me. I guess the reason I hesitated is price; a Mosaic box is approximately 2 months typical personal CD budget.

Forgot to mention Art Farmer too, if you need any more persuasion.

Not that my opinion means alot, but the Mobley is one of my favorite Mosaics.

This is great Mobley from around 1956-57 (single CD of 77 minutes). Though it's on Prestige it's on a par with most of the Mosaic set.

Thanks for the info! I have to get some work done on the car this week, and if that doesn't cost too much I'll order the Mosaic before the sale expires 6/15. If it does cost too much I'll just get the Prestige... ...(hadn't heard of that disc, but with Barry Harris on one of the sessions I consider it a must-have).

OK, I didn't buy the Mobley on sale, but just ordered a used copy.
Here's a question on another set currently on sale: Has anyone heard the Jazz Crusaders Mosaic? Before knowing much about jazz, I used to listen to a bit of the (later) Crusaders in the '70s, so there's some nostalgia value. The clips of the JC set sound really good, but I wonder whether 6 discs would be too much...
