I've always had an inclination to listen to older jazz artists long gone until the past few years when I decided to finally embrace the contemporary scene in a big way. I'd like to keep this discussion to today performers. Who are some of todays jazz pianists you admire most. A few names come to mind.
Harold Mabern David Hazeltine David Kikoski Renee Rosnes Benny Green Steve Kuhn Jon Mayer Orrin Evans Kenny Barron Bill Charlap
I hope to come up with more names later. You turn! If you'd like to suggest a recommendation or two, have at it.

Surprised you haven't mentioned Tardo Hammer or Hod O'Brien, Tom!

+1 on Mabern, Barron and Charlap +1 on Hod O'Brien (sometimes I have misgivings about his soloing, but not enough to keep me from purchasing his recordings) Denny Zeitlin (I think he's still playing) Jessica Williams (too many recordings to keep up with, but those I've heard are good) Ran Blake (!) Barry Harris (!) Stanley Cowell (!) Paul Bley Muhal Richard Abrams Cecil Taylor, of course Marilyn Crispell (what I've heard isn't really to my taste, but she can definitely play)
Keith Jarrett and Chick Corea are conspicuous by their absence so far. I have the highest respect for Corea's talent, but not necessarily for what he does with it (saw him live some years ago and would do so again if he were around, though). I also respect KJ, have some of his older ECM recordings, but have never been a big fan.
I have to admit that the modern pianists I like are pretty much on the senior side...I should investigate some of the younger generation!

John, you've convinced me on Alan Broadbent. Got to order some recordings; will lean to originals rather than standards.
