Now, when I was a kid everyone brought home a recorder. Summer was the time the dreaded brown and cream plastic squeal horn came out. It was dreadful. They were dreadful. The devil's flute. But... The recorder is a genuine orchestral instrument. It has been around since medieval times, and when played right is a thing of beauty. So far my kids havent brought one home and I'm saddened by that as it was part of my childhood, and now that I'm older I can appreciate this much maligned instrument. In short I want one, but preferably made of wood, in the medieval mold. And rather than squealing it will sing!

I too suffered through recorder lessons at school. I understand a lot of schools have swapped to using ukuleles for teaching music basics on.
Pretty sure I could still manage a barnstorming Au Clair De La Lune if you put one in my hands.
There's a recorder group who usually put on a candle lit medieval music festival in a church in Stafford at Christmas. I must admit the fancy dress aspect has always put me off enough to avoid parting with my £8 entry fee!

Stafford England? I originally come from an area of south Staffordshire! It's ok, you can come clean. We won't judge you if you're from Cannock ;-) It is indeed Stafford in England. I've been here seven years now and like it very much, although I occasionally pine for my more nomadic days. Since Jim handed me the keys to the forum last week I've been trying to work out how to get the 'location' field to appear in the mini profile at the side of people's posts to make it a bit more obvious which time zone people are working from.

I was from south Staffordshire, near Wolverhampton. Little village called Bilbrook, and codsall.

I remember in my school recorder was introduced in 5th grade, with the intention of "if you like that, maybe you want to join band in 6th grade?" which several friends of mine did but I didn't as I wasn't interested in playing a wind instrument at the time. I probably should have, looking back.
