I hear this come up a lot when reading about Miles Davis and co, but what defines be bop? I associate the term with 50s rock and roll.

Off-the-cuff definition: A type of jazz which was developed in the earlier 1940's out of and in reaction to the then current swing style. Pioneers included Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker and Charlie Christian. Bop was more complex melodically, harmonically and rhythmically than the music it replaced.

Bebop was the use of a melodic figure in jazz utilizing the "flatted 5th"
