I picked up a biography of Alan Lomax the other day and realised I don't really own that much of his work.
It's there a good box set that will give me a nice cross section of what he was about around? Something along the lines of the Fat Possum 5 CD George Mitchell Collection?

There used to be a CD box set of the complete Lomax 1959-60 Southern Journey field recordings. First released as a series of LPs in 1961/2. Check out the Lomax website.

Hmmm... there's a 13 CD Southern Journey series, but tracking them all down looks tricky and expensive

That's not the one I'm thinking of. In the early years of the CD the four original Atlantic LPs (Roots of the Blues, Blues Roll On, Sounds of the South & Negro Church Music) were on one double CD bearing the title - Roots of the Blues.

Yes. Yes I do.
That set contains three reissues of vinyl albums - one of prison songs, one of an extended interview with Memphis Slim and Big Bill Broonzy and one of Lomax himself playing folk with Peggy Seeger.
But I still feel there's a hole in my collection for an nice overview of his field recordings. [groovy]
