Tapping

Can someone explain why you would use tapping in the style of Van Halen and others who followed? I understand the "how" but the "why" escapes me. Hammer ons and pull offs seem to give the same and in my opinion better effects tonally. Am I missing something?

Well sometimes I use it to get to notes that wouldn't otherwise be readily accessible but having said that, it is quite rare as I kinda prefer hammer ons and pull offs too. As for the acoustic slappiong- gets on my tonsils after about 2 mintes. Tommy E is an exception but even so, I wouldn't buy a cd of a "tapmeister". As for slapping bass,. now don't get me started!
