I have quite a few Reservoir CDs, mostly but by no means all piano trio recordings (I'm a piano fan). I enjoy the label, but generally speaking most of the recordings I own are on the "restrained" (I'd rather not say "mellow") side, and not exactly "hard swingers". Maybe it's just what I've tried so far (Hod O'Brien's live Jazz Alley sets are exceptions). I recently purchased Rob Schneiderman's "Dark Blue", and it's a very nice swinging hard bop date, a type I haven't heard much of on Reservoir. Can anyone suggest more high-energy, hard-swinging Reservoir albums? Thanks.

Tom: Here are 3 hard swingers to start with (the order is deliberate). I'll post some more as I think of them.

There's more, but I'm exhausted!

Thanks, John! I thought of Nick Brignola, but am glad to have confirmation. I really like live recordings, so the Brignola (2) and Ponomarev recordings from Sweet Basil ought to be good places to start. (I'll add that I was most impressed by the playing of Ralph Moore and Brian Lynch - both new to me - on Schneiderman's "Dark Blue".)

Tom: Even though it's not live, don't shy away from Nick's "On a Different Level" date. Brignola aficionados consider it possibly his best ever recording. Lots of burn, too.

Tom, sorry not to run across this thread sooner. Very busy these days. Let me add that I believe the John Fedchock Big Band albums are some of the finest releases on the Reservoir label. I'll add some additional thoughts later if interested.

John mentioned this album earlier. I just wanted to confirm if you enjoyed "Dark Blue" by Rob Schneiderman, this should leave you satisfied as well.

Tom, it just so happens that Radio Waves is going to be my next purchase! I really enjoy Dark Blue. I also intend to get Brignola's On A Different Level and a Valery Ponomarev TBA, but not until my next credit card cycle... Re. Fedchock big band, I very rarely listen to big bands (just my weird personal taste), so am not sure.

I bought this (rather than the Sweet Basil disc) because I found a cheap used copy. Despite lackluster cover art and some musicians unfamiliar to me, it's very good and somewhat of a burner!
